Join the Ossining Public Library and the Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO) for a fun outdoors, hands-on workshop exploring the tools, techniques, and philosophies behind the powerful but accessible citizen science tools that anyone can use to learn more about the world around them, expand their day-to-day experiences with nature, and engage with a broader scientific community of experts and eager amateurs of all skill levels. No prior experience is required, only an open mind, a sharp eye, and a curiosity for the living environment that surrounds us.
We will meet at the Library Field, METRO’s new open-air laboratory right next door to Ossining in New Castle, New York. This is an exciting opportunity to explore a historic property, meet our new neighbors, and learn about an ongoing project to document our local biological diversity. This program will be led by the field technicians running The Flora of the Library Field project, a botanical survey of the Library Field property that will be conducted throughout 2026.
Rain or shine. Please bring a cell phone, water, sturdy footwear, and insect repellent if you think you will need it. The property is forested, with a system of unmarked trails. Please register to attend.
Directions: The Library Field is accessible from a gravel access road off of Croton Dam Rd/Kitchawan Rd (NY-134), next to the parking area for the Sunny Ridge Preserve. Look for a sign for address number 245. Staff will be on hand the morning of the event to help direct you from there. Google Maps location
