The Library Field is a project of the Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO). All activities at the Library Field follow the rules set forth in METRO’s code of conduct.
The Library Field welcomes through-hikers from dawn until dusk, 365 days a year. These rules are for your safety, and they help METRO to effectively steward and preserve this very special community space.
- Please stay on marked trails. Wandering off-trail could be unsafe for you, and it is certainly unsafe for many of our more sensitive plants and animals.
- We aspire to “leave no trace,” meaning you should not collect, remove, or leave behind anything at the Library Field.
- Please be respectful of our human and nonhuman neighbors – remain quiet, and do not wander onto adjacent properties.
- Dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on leash, and you must clean up after them.
- Hunting, fishing, and foraging are not permitted, except during a supervised, METRO-approved program.
- Fires are not permitted, except during a supervised, METRO-approved program.
- Please respect all historic structures, and do not climb on them or alter their structure or appearance in any way.
- Drugs and alcohol are not permitted.
- Camping is not permitted.
- Swimming and wading are not permitted
Please stay aware of hazards at the Library Field.
- Protect yourself from ticks and other insect bites
- Wear sun protection
- Be mindful of ledges and precipices
- Never walk on frozen pond surfaces
